NBA Trades: Bet on the Knicks

March 1st, 2011

Right now is one of the best times of the season to be betting on basketball.  The trade deadline has passed, and teams are morphing into new looks and abilities on the boards.  About 10% of the NBA’s players changed uniforms last week, which makes the teams more unpredictable commodities.  Now is the time to place bets with some honed analysis and take advantage of a team’s real worth versus its supposed value in the arena.

One fine example of shaking up the statistics is the New York Knicks’ acquisition of Carmelo Anthony.  New York fans in the Big Apple are overjoyed with Anthony’s arrival, especially after taking down the Miami Heat with a 91-86 triumph.  That made for two wins in three match ups for the Knicks since gaining Carmelo Anthony on the trade deadline.  The Knicks also picked up: Chauncey Billups, Corey Brewer, Anthony Carter, Renaldo Balkman and Shelden Williams.

On the other hand, if you’re a handicapper, the Knicks might create more interest as a fade candidate.  While the comeback win over Miami was impressive, New York still dropped the cash in their first two games with Anthony in their starting five.

Anthony (28.3 points, 8.6 rebounds per 40 minutes) is easily the best player of the bunch at this point in their careers, and Billups (20.8 points, 6.7 assists) is an immediate upgrade over Felton (17.5 points, 9.4 assists).  However, the Knicks sacrificed a lot of depth to land these two.  Bill Walker (14.8 points, 5.5 rebounds) is being asked to play a major part off the bench, something he hasn’t handled too well in his three years as a pro.

The market will continue to adjust to these deadline deals as the new-look teams play more minutes and prove their worth.  The championship odds on the NBA futures market are being updated as we go to press, so enjoy this window of opportunity while you can.
