ARKANSAS STATE (+6) at SMU -- Sure, SMU routed Sam Houston State, but the Mustangs aren't putting forth genuine efforts against real teams, and that's a reflection on head coach Phil Bennett, who might wind up ultimately getting his walking papers as a result. Clearly this team laid down against North Texas, in a very winnable situation, as they couldn't handle a third-string UNT quarterback (Woody Wilson). Now SMU has to proceed without their best offensive player, injured running back DeMyron Martin, and to assume redshirt freshman Justin Willis got a needed shot in the arm by throwing five TD passes against Sam Houston is wishful thinking at best. Arkansas State comes in with one of the Sun Belt's best defenses, and has had an extra week to prepare. And for some reason, SMU can't seem to win early in the season (just 2-20 SU in September against Division 1-A teams).
