NBA Trades: Bet on the Knicks

March 1st, 2011

Right now is one of the best times of the season to be betting on basketball.  The trade deadline has passed, and teams are morphing into new looks and abilities on the boards.  About 10% of the NBA’s players changed uniforms last week, which makes the teams more unpredictable commodities.  Now is the time to place bets with some honed analysis and take advantage of a team’s real worth versus its supposed value in the arena.

One fine example of shaking up the statistics is the New York Knicks’ acquisition of Carmelo Anthony.  New York fans in the Big Apple are overjoyed with Anthony’s arrival, especially after taking down the Miami Heat with a 91-86 triumph.  That made for two wins in three match ups for the Knicks since gaining Carmelo Anthony on the trade deadline.  The Knicks also picked up: Chauncey Billups, Corey Brewer, Anthony Carter, Renaldo Balkman and Shelden Williams.

On the other hand, if you’re a handicapper, the Knicks might create more interest as a fade candidate.  While the comeback win over Miami was impressive, New York still dropped the cash in their first two games with Anthony in their starting five.

Anthony (28.3 points, 8.6 rebounds per 40 minutes) is easily the best player of the bunch at this point in their careers, and Billups (20.8 points, 6.7 assists) is an immediate upgrade over Felton (17.5 points, 9.4 assists).  However, the Knicks sacrificed a lot of depth to land these two.  Bill Walker (14.8 points, 5.5 rebounds) is being asked to play a major part off the bench, something he hasn’t handled too well in his three years as a pro.

The market will continue to adjust to these deadline deals as the new-look teams play more minutes and prove their worth.  The championship odds on the NBA futures market are being updated as we go to press, so enjoy this window of opportunity while you can.

Underdog Bayne Wins Daytona 500: NASCAR Betting Season Begins

February 22nd, 2011

Trevor Bayne became the youngest driver to win the Daytona 500 last Sunday.  While Bayne looked strong in practice and during his Gatorade Duel at Daytona on Thursday, he had only one Sprint Cup Series start under his belt.  He had never won any type of NASCAR race.  His highest finish before Sunday was third in last year’s Nationwide Series.  Bayne was never considered a serious challenger for the 500 crown.

The Daytona 500 took place this past Sunday to officially begin the NASCAR betting season.  The new sticky, asphalt track surface at the Daytona Speedway offered one of the most exciting upset races in years at the event.  Recent track speeds were reported as high as 206 mph during last week’s Shootout.  NASCAR requests made slight alterations to the carburetor restrictor plate in order to slow down the pace a bit.  Nevertheless, two-car packs were common at the Shootout and also at the recent Gatorade Duels.  Nose-to-tail drafting techniques were prominent during the 500.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. had won the pole in practice runs last weekend, but lost it on Wednesday due to wrecking his car.  Crashes could be more prevalent due to the tightly bunched runs taking place.  Junior is still listed as the pole-sitter on the official lineup, but he will start at the back of the pack as the race begins on Sunday.  He won the Daytona 500 in 2004, but hasn’t won a race in his last 93 starts.  Kurt Busch, who won the Gatorade Duel, last week started on the pole last Sunday for the Daytona 500.  Busch also won last week’s Shootout.

As is custom, the winning team, Wood Brothers Racing, and driver, Trevor Bayne, unveiled the No. 21 Ford inside the Daytona International Speedway Track Tours building behind Turn 4 on Monday morning.  The car will stay parked there on public display for one year.

Sports Betting Trends: Online Video Game Wagers

February 7th, 2011

Virgin Gaming and Electronic Arts (EA) have merged a partnership for online gambling with popular online video games such as Madden 11, NBA 2K11 and Halo.

President of Virgin Gaming, William Levy, reports “This is the biggest deal we’ve ever had.  We have entry fee-based tournaments.  We also have sponsored tournaments.  Let’s say there was a $10 entry fee tournament, you could click ‘enter now,’ agree to the terms and conditions and then we deduct the $10 from your account and put it towards the pot.”

This format, currently available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, is in process just as Levy describes.  There is a buy-in fee, similar to a poker tournament, which is deducted from a player’s account.  The winner takes the pot.  You can also find sponsored tournament action.  Recently, Virgin Gaming and Maxim Magazine held a Madden 11 tournament on the PS3 online platform.  Winning prizes included a trip to the Maxim Super Bowl party in Dallas, totaling over $25,000.

Virgin Gaming reports about 170,000 users in 30 countries.  With the new wagering on video games format in process, the number of players is bound to heighten.  Next on the docket is the launching of Madden NFL 11 Red Zone, which should be in play within several weeks.  The new feature will allow players to create open and private tournaments in order to play at their own leisure.  Current online video games, which have been successful in tournament wagers for Virgin Gaming, include NBA 2K11 and Halo.  The recent inclusion of EA titles are expected to be a major boost to the company’s user base.

“Competitive online gaming is an increasingly popular component of our industry and a great way for EA Sports and Virgin Gaming to help connect gamers around the world through the global language of sports,” said Peter Moore, President of EA Sports, in a statement. “Virgin Gaming demonstrates the system-wide integrity we desire, and this is a great opportunity for EA Sports fans to experience secure and impeccably managed online tournaments for some of our top titles.”

Virgin Gaming has taken precautions to protect its gamers.  Tournament winners have their game play and activities monitored to ensure there is no cheating.  Users also are allowed to only load $500 onto their account each week.  Larger deposits require direct contact with customer service.

This is an innovative move for Virgin Gaming, owned by Richard Branson, and EA Sports, one of the most recognized video game companies.  Around $2 billion is believed to be wagered on sports in Las Vegas every year, but as much as $60 billion is estimated to be wagered online annually.

This is a major amount of money that is available for businesses to tap into if they can find a means to reach users.  By combining sports betting and the currently most popular sports video games, these companies believe they have created that platform.

Super Bowl XLV Point Spread

February 2nd, 2011

Several major offshore sportsbooks have moved the Super Bowl XLV spread from 2.5 to 3.  You can find many of the markers remaining at -2.5 from this past weekend activity, but the boost adjustment has been in place as of yesterday.

Books are claiming that sharp money from notable gambling arenas on the Packers -2.5 has pushed the move to a field goal for this coming Sunday’s Lombardi Trophy race.  A notable 70% of the total action on the side has been geared toward the Green Bay Packers, but oddsmakers believe the move to -3 will carry through the kickoff.

The Super Bowl spread isn’t the only adjustment taking place.  Moneyline odds have also shifted taking the Packers to a -140 favorite to win over the Steelers this coming weekend.  The adjustment is taking place even though 65% of the moneyline wagers are being placed on the Steelers.  Pittsburgh is now at +120 to win their 3rd Super Bowl in six years.  This creates an attraction to bet on the moneyline with a spread of this nature, rather than taking the underdog and points, bettors might instead take the plus money on the Steelers moneyline.

At the moment the total for Super Bowl XLV is at 44 or 44.5 points in most markets.  Oddsmakers predict the gambling community to push the number in the next couple of days toward 46.

MMA Action: UFC 126 Middleweight Championship, Silva vs. Belfort

January 10th, 2011

Alright sports betting fans; if you like fast-paced action that undoubtedly will be a must see event – you know that the upcoming UFC 126 has to be on your docket.

Perhaps the most anticipated UFC event to date: UFC 126 taking place on February 5, 2010 in Las Vegas will feature the most talked about match-up in MMA history.  Middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva will defend his title against fellow Brazilian Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort.  Fans can expect to see a knockout in this championship match-up, as both fighters tend be stand-up competitors with toe-to-toe action.

Champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva (27-4-1-0, 15 KOs) hasn’t been defeated in 14 fights since January 2004.  He has been dubbed the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet having dominated by submission Dan Henderson, and knocking out Nate Marquardt, Chris Leben, Forrest Griffin and Rich Franklin (twice; Franklin vs. Griffin will be taking place during this same event – another must see bout).  Silva has been jumping back and forth between middleweight and light heavyweight classes while dominating both.  He seems to be unstoppable, yet a very close call with the match-up between Silva and Chael Sonnen during UFC 117 may have just been what Silva needed to keep him focused on his untouchable status.  Sonnen was able to take down Silva and deliver serious ground-and-pound action throughout the match.  With under 2:00 remaining in the final round of the match, “The Spider” was able to obtain a triangle choke for submission by tap-out, and extended his title defense record to seven.

Challenger Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort (19-8, 13 KOs) is a former UFC light heavyweight champ, having defeated Randy Couture for the title in 2004.  His UFC fighting history dates back to 1997, as he climbed the ladder to become a champ.  He had some losses to the likes of Tito Ortiz, Chuck Liddell (in their prime), and Couture later in 2004 to relinquish the title after holding it for 8 months.  Belfort took a hiatus from the sport in 2006 due to a steroid controversy.  “The Phenom” returned to the UFC in 2009 with a major knockout win over Rich Franklin at 195 pounds.  Back in full stride with a clean bill of health and determination, Belfort is more than ready to reclaim his champion status.  He has the strength of a heavyweight at the middleweight class, and as a southpaw will create some obstacles for Silva.

Silva is favored at -240 over Belfort, who comes in at +190.  These two super strikers should both be hungry and out for blood in what could be a major slug-fest.  Don’t look for this one to go the full distance of five full five minute rounds.  Silva is going to prove to the world that he is still the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

U.S. Internet Gaming Bill Interruption; New Jersey Online Gambling Bill Advancement

December 22nd, 2010

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) is fighting against time to find a foothold for his online poker legalization measure prior to the end of the current congressional session.  However, there is a positive movement for US based legalization of online gambling, as the state of New Jersey pushes forward to approve in-state online gaming.

The New Jersey State Assembly Regulatory Oversight and Gaming Committee approved several different bills related to the state’s horse racing and gambling industries.  These efforts include a bill that would legalize online gambling for state residents.  The online gambling and sports betting bills, launched by state Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D), are anticipated to be voted on by the entire Assembly by the close of this year.  A move that could see both pieces of legislation become law before the end of the year if approved by the state’s Governor Chris Christie (R).

Lesniak announced to the Assembly that both bills would allow New Jersey residents to gamble online, however an earlier amendment to allow international customers to participate has been dropped.  The New Jersey online gambling bill would not modify the legality of online gaming for most of the United States.  The bill would lay down a tax rate of 15% on Internet gambling revenue in New Jersey.  Lesniak also stated, if legalized, online gambling would generate $210 – $250 million in annual gross revenues for the state. He said the measure would also create nearly 2,000 jobs.

Nevada Governor-elect, Brian Sandoval (R), supports federal efforts to legalize online poker, but there have been “no discussions of doing it on the state level” if Reid’s efforts were to fail.  Gaming industry analysts and company executives believe New Jersey’s efforts could have an impact on the national debate over online gambling.  “If this passes it could be a tipping point for online gambling,” said David G. Schwartz, director for gaming research with the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. “They’ve already showed that casino gambling could be regulated and successful outside of Nevada.”  Schwartz said he expected Nevada-based gaming companies with New Jersey properties to get involved with online poker if the measure becomes law.

New Jersey lawmakers also approved a resolution that will ask voters next year to decide whether sports betting ought to be legalized in New Jersey.  “Sports gaming is a bit of a harder sell. Poker is probably a good place to start,” Schwartz said.  He cited the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act passed by Congress in 1992 as an obstacle to legalizing sports betting in New Jersey. The bill basically outlawed sports betting nationwide, except for sports lotteries in Oregon, Delaware and Montana, as well as licensed sports books in Nevada.  Schwartz said poker accounts for about 1 percent of the $10 billion in total gaming revenues annually in Nevada.  Schwartz also commented, “You never know, it could take off if online gaming becomes legal.”

NCAA Basketball Early Action

November 11th, 2010

The college basketball season has tipped off, and some of the larger school teams (Maryland, #4 Pittsburgh, #16 Illinois, and #25 Texas) are looking at match-ups with smaller teams to get an early start on padding the season record.  The b-ball action gets underway in earnest this weekend when Vegas sportsbooks will have as many as 52 games on the board, which will include 5 tournaments.  #1 Duke will make their season opener against Princeton this weekend.

The early season games are usually a favorite time for the sharpest of Sharps in college hoops due mainly to the ratings for each team changing at rapid-fire pace as every game is played… fast action with hopefully easy money.  Of course there are not a lot of statistics to go by at this point, other than looking back at the previous season, returning players, and guess-timations on how new recruits will bring their game.  This makes it tough on the odds makers at first, and where the Sharps take advantage with betting their opinions against the larger perceived errors on the giant smorgasbord of games in play.

With 347 Division I NCAA basketball teams, the odds makers have to find a means to place a rating on the action, and it’s nearly impossible to maintain consistent accuracy.  About 25% of the games will be out of synch with accurate ratings.  The smaller schools and mid-major teams are usually overlooked and undervalued, particularly when matched up against the larger, ranked teams.  These first few weeks will show a lot of line movement and shuffling on the games as the sportsbooks begin their reactions off the more reputable Sharps.  Judging by what the original line is, movement can be as much as two points off a one limit wager. Sometimes it’s not a bad idea to follow along with the shifts, but don’t get to the window, or click too late as the opening value may soon be gone on the adjusted line.
